Line Drawing Seat

Inspired by the plant drawings of Ellsworth Kelly, this project captures the contours of the artist’s delicate yet masterful line and extrudes them into a three dimensional soft seat meant for lounging.

Initially hand-sketched, the frame’s profile was then transferred from Adobe Illustrator and into AutoCAD for final processing to be cut with a CNC router. The entirety of this seat is made from upcycled materials from previous projects. The interior structure is composed of plywood, insulation foam, and carpet padding. A woven upholstery fabric covers the structure, with complex upholstering that employs piping, button tufting, and compound curve pattern making.
